Revered equally by both Hindus and Buddhists, Muktinath temple (elevation 3710m) is located at the foot of Thorong La mountain pass in Mustang district of Nepal. Hindus call this place Mukti Kshetra, which literally translates as the place of salvation or moksha. Similarly, Buddhists call it Chumig Gyatsa, meaning Hundred Waters in Tibetan.Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, meditated here while on his way to Tibet.
Built in pagoda-style, amodest-looking main temple houses a life-sized local Buddhist culture, and of course the trip evokes a sense of spirituality and peace of mind that comes with a visit to such a venerated place like Muktinath. Muktinath tour does not involve high altitude trekking, nor does it involve strenuous treks over the mountains. Our trip to Muktinath begins from Kathmandu, and en route to Pokhara, we visit Manakamana Temple by cable car. We arrive Pokhara later in the evening. Next day, we take a domestic flight to Jomsom, followed by a jeep ride to Muktinath temple. We then retrace our way back to Kathmandu using the same mode of transportation.
